Gielgud Theatre Commissioned by the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, from one of Norways foremost and most popular contemporary dramatists this intriguing play concerns the life of a woman artist reflecting on the conflicts with her sister and mother and her longing for her absent seaman father. Now in maturity
she strives to unlock the creative well-spring which will allow her
to paint herself in her youth. She searches for the clues in her past
that will literally build a picture of herself. GBS
Theatre The turbulent story of the demonic love between Cathy and Heathcliff has become an icon of Victorian passion. Yet Brontës greatest novel is a subtle story of how the humiliation of youth emerges in later life as a terrible and violent revenge. The characters in her masterpiece are complex and penetrating studies of human nature, giving an insight into how the wild and rugged landscape shapes the lives of those who live there. William Gaskills dramatic adaptations of literary sources have been among the most enthralling theatre seen at RADA over the years. Book early for the GBS! Jerwood
Vanbrugh Theatre First seen at
the National Theatre in 2003, McCafferty's remarkable play charts
the lives of twenty characters over a hot summer's day in Belfast.
Moving between the pub, the local store and the work place it reveals
the loves and the passionate rivalries of ordinary people living in
extraordinary times. Beneath the veneer of normality and the petty
crimes of the disaffected young people is the ever present sectarian
violence. Yet the compassion and humour with which these characters
are observed makes for a vital piece of contemporary theatre - a tapestry
of courage and resilience. John
Gielgud Theatre It is Bellas birthday and she has taken the dangerous step of inviting friends and former lovers to a surprise drink in a bar. The result is a battle in the war of the sexes which exposes all the ambiguities, uncertainties and dilemmas of life for the liberated young in the 21st century. And it is the women who drive the action forward in a study of the conflict between love and ambition. Raines witty, fast moving and challenging play was premiered in 2006 at the Old Red Lion, transferring to the Trafalgar Studios in the West End. It was shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award and signals the emergence of a major new writing talent. GBS
Theatre Maxim Gorky, heir to Anton Chekhov, created plays full of humour and passion which reflected the changing face of Russia in the years leading up to the revolution. In Barbarians he gives a remarkable picture of the kaleidoscope of provincial life from the Mayor to the poorest beggar, who are shaken by the rising tide of modernisation as engineers arrive in a backwater to build a railway. But a far greater disruption is caused by the beautiful, charismatic wife of a local businessman with whom they all fall in love. Jerwood
Vanbrugh Theatre Zilov sits alone in his room. The doorbell rings and flowers are delivered, but they are for his own funeral. In a series of flashbacks he remembers his marriage, his affairs, his drunken evenings with friends and lovers. And always before him is the promise of indulging his passion - the duck hunting trip which is his obsession. But who is Predicting his death? Vampilov, who tragically died in his thirties, is one of the most exciting writing talents to emerge in the Russian playwriting of the second half of the 20th century We welcome back
