Based on a sensational
murder trial in the 1920's, on which the author worked as a journalist,
this expressionist drama premiered on Broadway, starring Clark Gable,
before opening in London and Moscow. It was recently revived by the
National Theatre starring RADA graduate Fiona Shaw.
The theme of 'everywoman'
trapped in a male world of work, marriage and sexism is explored with
devastating accuracy in a play many years ahead of its time. In a
campaigning play, Treadwell explores the right of women to commit
murder.

A classic of the eighteenth century - a play with songs based on the
folk tunes of the day to tell the story of the highwayman Macheath,
the original anti-hero, as he schemes his way through love affairs
with both Polly, daughter of the arch crook and Lucy, the gaoler's
daughter.
In a world of
pimps, thieves and whores, Gay brings alive the low life of London
and creates characters who have become legends in their own right.
One of the most
popular shows of its day this is a piece of theatre that has lost
none of its allure in three hundred years.

"Almost all
religion involves some sort of spirit possession" - so writes
David Lan, co-author with Caryl Churchill of this unusual exploration
of the theme of the Greek tragedy, The Bacchae.
Taking as their
starting point the subject of women and violence, the playwrights
have woven together a series of modern stories which are inhabited
by powerful forces from the past. First staged by the Joint Stock
Theatre Group in 1986 the play resonates as shockingly today as its
theme did to Greek audiences in the 5th century BC.
The play contains
scenes violence and physical abuse.

Celebrating the
150th anniversary of the birth of Bernard Shaw, music critic, dramatist,
RADA Council member and benefactor, we revive one of Shaw's lesser
known but most delightful comedies.
This is a satire
on the theatrical conventions of his early years in the theatre and
a celebration of a new theatre of social engagement. Shaw was a champion
of the intellectual rights of women and a new relationship between
the sexes.
A young female
Cambridge undergraduate has written a play about rebellious youth
and the generation gap, inviting the London critics to witness a private
performance with startling results.

The second comedy
written by the greatest of restoration dramatists in 1694 strikes
a remarkable balance between the wit and intellectual toughness of
traditional 'Restoration Comedy' yet introduces a strand of realism
and even sentimental morality which surprised the audience of his
day.
At the centre
of the action are Cynthia and Mellefont whose hesitations on the night
before their wedding are made all the greater by the adulteries of
the society around them, the Froths, the Plyants and the disintegrating
marriage of the Touchwoods.
We welcome back
to Britain, after many successful years working in Australia, the
distinguished director, Richard Cotterill.
